Winter comes and goes year after year. Yet, it seems that some residents still aren’t taking the necessary measures to stay warm although it’s cold. Unfortunately, according to the CDC: “From 1999 to 2011, a total of 16,911 deaths in the United States, an average of 1,301 per year, were associated with exposure to excessive natural cold.” We don’t want to be grim, but we do want to be realistic and safe. Here are a few things we can all do to know how stay warm this winter season:
1. Dress warm: Might sound like a no-brainer, but a lot of times people underestimate how cold it is outside, and they don’t wear the proper clothing. Dress in layers so that if you get too warm, you can always remove clothing. If you leave the house without enough clothes, you’re usually stuck. It’s better to be safe and snug than sorry.
2. Keep moving: There are times we can’t avoid being outside in frigid temperatures. The longer we’re outside, the more easily we can start to feel the cold, even if we’ve worn enough clothes. However, there is something we always have with us, energy. Find a way to move around, march in place, swing your hands, be creative, anything to create heat.
3. Drink something warm: Coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea, whatever you like, warm drinks increase your body’s core temperature pretty quickly and can keep you warm for a considerable amount of time. Plus, these drinks are pretty cheap, so you can get more when you need it at any gas station or deli. Better yet, get a good thermos and bring some with you when you leave the house.
Winter weather lasts a full 3 months or more each year. Let’s enjoy ourselves, and stay warm. If a problem arises and you need help, you can easily notify the authorities, rescuers, as well as your loved ones by using the Secugo app.
